Summer tulips: dahlias. Photoblog of a flower show garden

…other dahlias are in between summer & autumn

The end of the tulip season is never a happy one. The sight of the sea of colours brings so much joy and happiness. Once the tulips are gone, what is there to look forward to? Well, dahlias! You could call them the summer tulips. Just like tulips they’re bulb flowers, they’re amazingly colourful, with lots of varieties and there are fields full of them. Here’s an photo impression of the dahlia show garden near Keukenhof.  Read more

August Events in the Netherlands

Summer in Holland is fantastic. Long, colourful days with nice temperatures and a good amount of sunshine ( most of the time at least).   Whether you like music, food or flowers, t here’s always something to do. Most of the time you can even combine all of your interests, passions and hobbies by going to one place or even one festival. In the post  Summer Festival Hopping you could already read about my favourite festivals in the province South Holland. Now, to make sure you won’t miss out on some typical Dutch activities during your Holland holiday I wanted to highlight some August events in the Netherlands that Verita’s Visit organises themed food & flowers.

Easter break in the tulip fields

Celebrate your Easter break in the tulip fields near Keukenhof.  It’s not just for the colourful flower carpets. The region of tulips, daffodils & hyacinths transforms into one big festival. Pack your easter eggs, fill your bottles with eggnog, head out and explore the Keukenhof area with these tips.

Tip 1:  Explore the Keukenhof area by bicycle

When I’m on my bike, every day feels like a holiday. Especially when I get to spend those days with visitors from abroad. On a bicycle you find treasures which you wouldn’t have spotted by car, coach or public transport. You can cover a larger distance than by foot. And, you can easily share your discoveries. What I love most are the conversations enroute, based on the things you see. Trees in all kind of different shapes, hares running around through the flower fields, red-and-white windowshutters, labyrinths and secret passages to castles…Can’t say it enough: Cycling is the best way to get around!

Tip 2: Pick your own tulips

In the Keukenhof area there are two tulip picking gardens. This one near Sassenheim is my favourite as the tulips are of the most exotic types. And, as you can see in this picture: tulip picking is a great activity for the whole family. Especially if the challenge is to only pick tulips with bulb attached to it. It’s immensly difficult to get the flower bulb out and your hands get quite dirty, but I planted some of the bulbs from last year and they’re amazingly beautiful!

Tip 3: Get creative with hyacinths, daffodils & tulips

Employees of the hyacinth growers are is already cutting & collecting hyacinths for the decoration of the Flower Parade, taking place in the weekend of 21-23 April.  Hyacinths are not only used for the flower parade though. The flower villages Lisse, De Zilk, Vogelenzang create these amazing flower mosaics and put them on display coming weekend, 15 & 16 April. There’s a full route you can cycle or walk to see all the flower mosaics. All tourist informations in the region will have a copy of the route. On Saturday 15 April kids show their creativity in the mini Flower Parade in Lisse.

Tip 4: Beer & Tulip Festival

Leiden-Keukenhof bike tour : Family Outing

It’s a 40 km bike ride, around 24 miles and a great mix of different typical dutch landscapes. the Leiden-Keukenhof bike tour is definitely worth it and a great idea for a family outing as well. See for yourself.

Celebrating Mondriaan & Dutch Design at syrup waffle stop on Leiden-Keukenhof bike tour

What I love about the Leiden-Keukenhof bike tour is what happens when the first flower field is spotted. In the first part, from Leiden till the lake area Kagerplassen you see canals, windmills,  monumental houses. Here and there a beautiful garden full of spring flowers.

The power flower effect!

The first flower field comes into sight a 30 minutes cycling from Leiden.  A sparkle in the eyes, the corners of the mouth curl into a smile and suddenly the cycling seems to go much easier. Spotting the first flower field, breathing in the fresh air mixed with the perfume of hyacinth, it gives energy. That is thé power flower effect!
